La mer en moi
Helge Letonja with Kossi Sebastien A. Wokawui
Many people have fled to Europe across the Mediterranean, experiencing profound moments and traumas, and perhaps also solidarity at sea. How do survivors process their feelings after the crossing? What remains of the experience, the memory of the odyssey? Exposed together with strangers to the dangers of the elements, with the hope of arrival and the prospect of possible maritime rescue, which can bring one to safety but also throw one back?
With “La mer en moi” (The Sea Within Me), choreographer Helge Letonja embarks on an empathetic search for traces, together with Togolese dancer Kossi Aholou Wokawui, where personal fates come to light. Letonja transforms the stage into a space dedicated entirely to water. Water as the gentle and profound place of reflection and as a wild, tumultuous element in which humans become playthings of the tides and isolating forces. Traces dissolve in the water, and time levels blend. Flashbacks and flash-forwards intertwine into stories, reflecting to us the turbulent inner landscape of people who seek to calm and start their lives anew after extreme experiences.
