Helge Letonja

Helge Letonja

As artistic director of steptext dance project and the dance company Of Curious Nature, Helge Letonja has created more than 60 dance works presented worldwide, often realized in interdisciplinary and transcultural collaborations. In addition he choreographs for opera productions, including productions at the Salzburg Festival, Zurich Opera House, Berlin State Opera, New National Opera Tokyo, Semperoper Dresden or the Opera in Peking.

As a choreographer, Letonja creates vibrant images that reflect social conditions and processes and combine emotional and mental movements of individual and social bodies with metaphorical contexts. In his most recent works with Of Curious Nature, he deepens the artistic forms of expression of his ensemble in order to draw the complexity of today’s human beings. His repertoire ranges from dynamic, powerful ensemble pieces to touching and metaphoric choreographic landscapes. Helge Letonja is also a tireless advocate for the interests of dance, both in his adopted home of Bremen and nationwide, as a board member of the Dachverband Tanz.

As a dancer Letonja studied classical dance in Graz and Amsterdam as well as modern dance under Alvin Ailey and Erick Hawkins in New York. He performed in a wide range of styles: from ballet at Oper Graz to Jan Fabre, Montréal Danse to the Tanztheater in Bremen under Susanne Linke among others.
